The contemporary documentary approach embraces a fresh perspective on capturing real-life events and stories. This approach goes beyond traditional methods and allows for more innovative and creative storytelling techniques. It emphasizes authenticity, social issues, and close observation of the subjects, providing a raw and unfiltered glimpse into their lives. By embracing new technologies and storytelling methods, the contemporary documentary approach strives to shed light on relevant topics, challenge conventional narratives, and engage audiences on a deeper level.

Last year, Chitrobhasha Gallery hosted a photography workshop titled ‘Contemporary Documentary Approach’ that spanned over two months. Objective of that workshop was to coach participants on contemporary documentary photography techniques and offer a distinct viewpoint on storytelling through visual narratives. Building upon this endeavor, the gallery subsequently arranged an exhibition under the title `Other Way Around’.

Nine photographers participating in the exhibition have chosen subjects for their photographs based on their emotional and spatial surroundings. The exhibition showcases a diverse range of images, including powerful photographs depicting the struggles of Rohingya people who have fled their country, including inland migrated people leaving in a miserable condition, as well as sensitive documentation of the lives of stray and orphaned horses in the city. Additionally, abandoned spaces within the city has captured as subjects, offering a glimpse into their forgotten stories. The exhibition also features a fragmentary narrative of the passengers on a shuttle train, providing a unique perspective on their experiences. Furthermore, personal photographs are displayed as a testament to the power of storytelling through the preservation of emotions. Among these personal photographs, there is a poignant image dedicated to a doctor’s professional responsibilities, a photograph commemorating the photographer’s father, and even a photograph taken by a photographer who, due to physical illness, is unable to venture outside to capture images with a camera. These photographs encapsulate the essence of capturing a moment and conveying emotions through the art of photography. Under the guidance of the highly esteemed photographer Abir Abdulla, the workshop was proficiently coordinated by Asma Beethe from Chitrobhasha Gallery.
